Arizona Businesses Hope the Home Team Doesn’t Make the Super Bowl

The businesses of Arizona hope the playoff bound Arizona Cardinals does not make it to the Super Bowl, which will be played in Glendale this year, the team's home stadium...  Sounds weird, right?  Financially though, the businesses right the right to be concerned if the Cardinals get the NFC title, and that is a lack of income from tourism.

The NFL and local organizing committees estimated that the Super Bowl brings in $500 million of economic impact to the host community.  If the Cardinals go to the Super Bowl, that $500 million could easily turn into only $50 million.  That is because there would be way fewer tourists, and they are the only people to spend significant amounts of money on an event like this, not the locals.  Some of the loss in Super Bowl revenue would be made up in extra Cardinals' playoff games, so the lost income will not be as bad as it could have been without considering that.

I think the Super Bowl will be extremely profitable at the stadium.  I do not agree that tourism will bring the $500 million to only $50 million.  Locals fans and businesses will support their hometown team and spend some money they would not have done in the regular season; however, assuming the estimates would be accurate, the best possible scenario would be the the Cardinals lose in the NFC Championship game.

  1. I guess the Arizona Cardinal's management staff can rejoice, because the team's showing was less than sufficient. With the administrators happy, the players will remain sorrowful and hope for better seasons to come.

  2. When I read the title, I was pretty confused at first. You would think that if the Super Bowl was going to be played in one of the team's home stadiums, it would bring in a lot more fans. But, the Super Bowl is so popular anyways, that the tickets will be sold out even if both of the teams are on the other side of the country from where the Super Bowl is being played. It just brings in much more money that way because people will have to pay for hotels and what not.

  3. I completely agree with with this article. If the Cardinals played in the Super Bowl it wouldn't affect the revenue from tickets. Hotel would not gain as much money, as well as restaurants. Some people who go to the Super Bowl spend their whole week there.

  4. I agree with Zoel Jerbe and this article as well. Tourists are what brings in money for the Super Bowl. The money hotels and restaurants must make during that weekend is ridiculous. Fans go all out with buying apparel as well. If I were running the show, I would not want the home team to make it to the Super Bowl either, simply because of the money.

  5. Well the team that host the Superbowl will never make it there anyways, but anyways I think its good that they didn't make it because it would have taken money away from the host community.

  6. I agree that the city will make more than 50 million and will be extremely profitable. No matter where the Super Bowl is held, people will flock to that area.

  7. I think that if many football fans (wealthy enough to buy Super Bowl tickets) were to go to the Cardinals hometown that they would be making a pretty good profit. I don't really understand the businesses concern.

  8. I can see why they don't want the hometown team to make it. Super fans would be paying out rages prices from hotels to food. You cut out the travel expensive you los a huge amount of profit.
